Fun with JaneMay 24, 2010 There is no doubt about it, Margaret Rutherford had a jolly good time playing the redoubtable sleuth Miss Jane Marple. If you are an avid reader of Agatha Christie novels, you will notice differences in her portrayal, and - I believe - for the better!
'Murder She Said' (based on '4:50 From Paddington', a.k.a. 'What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw!') - On his first encounter with Miss Marple, Inspector Craddock, politely, and with a touch of condescendence, implies that her imaginative report of a woman being strangled by a man on a passing train was: just that! Infuriated, Jane sets off to prove him wrong.
'Murder at the Gallop' (based on 'After the Funeral') - A man tumbles down the stairs and lands dead-on-arrival at Miss Marple's feet. It appears to be an accident, but Jane finds something that doesn't belong there: a piece of clay from someone's boot.
'Murder Ahoy' - Jane takes in her first meeting as a trustee for the Youth Reclamation Board, but the meeting is cut short when a trustee's life is snuffed out just as he is about to speak. Jane suspects the answer to why he was murdered may be found on the foundation's ship Battledore.
'Murder Most Foul' (based on 'Mrs. McGinty's Dead') - A police sergeant, on his nightly rounds, spots the silhouette of a hanging woman on a drawn window shade. He rushes in and catches a man with his hands on the rope. "An open-and-shut case!" Inspector Craddock thinks, but he didn't count on Miss Marple being on the jury ...
Picture (DVD): Excellent (4). On the date of this review, Amazon lists the aspect ratio as 1.33:1; however, all of these movies are in a widescreen format nicely filling out a HD screen of 16x9 (1.78:1).
Sweet old ladyApr 29, 2010 These 4 films are a bit dated but still entertaining and amusing greatly due to the presence of the unbeatable Margaret Rutherford. It's also fun to see her acted with her real life husband, Stringer Davis, in each one of them. GQ
The only genuine Miss MarpleApr 09, 2010 Margaret Rutherford is the best.
All others pale in comparison. I remember these from when I watched them on television a thousand years ago. Eagerly I watch new versions as they appear, only to be disappointed. Margaret Rutherford and the entire crew have set the standard for Miss Marple. No one else has come close.

Not to be missedMar 05, 2010 What a treat. Margaret Rutherford puts all the joy and suspense and it all amounts to sheer pleasure. The wonderful expressions on her face and the frustrated chief inspector are just a hoot. I particularly like that she gets several marriage proposals. Hang in there Mr Stringer! There are so many Miss Marples but for my money Margaret Rutherford is the perfect sly as a fox addled Jane. I have watched these many times and each time discover something fresh.
oldmoviebuffFeb 24, 2010 Margaret Rutherford was quite an old gal and brought alot to her portrayal of Jane Marple. If you are an old movie buff like me you will enjoy it.
