 Good Acting, Confusing StoryMay 25, 2010
I love Holly Hunter and this show is saved from being a confusing mess by her performance. But the show ultimately relies on lots of nude scenes and a convoluted storyline about redemption via a personal angel that makes no sense whatsoever. Grace is a cop and a good cop but at the age of 50 is still acting like a 25 year old. She gets drunk almost every night, is seeing a married man and picks up strangers for sex. For a woman of 50 with a responsible job and career I found her behavior disturbing and not something to emulate. I like having heroes. Grace is not my hero. I know the inevitable comparison will be made to male heroes who exhibit this kind of behavior, but they were never my heroes. The story of Grace's angel "Earl" seems like a deliberate add-on to the usual cop story and the writers/producers don't really seem to know what to do with him other than have him appear out of nowhere and chastise Grace without giving her any support or insight into her life or beliefs. The angel insists that she has to believe in God--why? I do believe in God so it's not a question of my not liking that premise, but where's the rationale? Just because he says so? In other shows where God and angels play a role, such as "Touched by an Angel", the angels serve to guide and help people make choices--in this show "Earl" doesn't seem to have a clue why he is there with Grace except that he has been told he has to save her. The first season is probably the best, but after that I found the show so repetitive and silly and Grace's behavior so unbelievable (50 year olds can't get drunk every night and still perform their jobs well) that I stopped watching it.

An innovative TV drama with a flawed, realistic female protagonist. Holly Hunter is amazing as Grace, an Oklahoma City police detective suffering from several types of survivor guilt. In this season, she meets her "last chance angel", Earl, who wants to renew Grace's faith in God. Grace isn't so sure that is a good idea.

Not wildly believable...Mar 10, 2010
...and I don't mean Earl the Angel. I can suspend my disbelief that far. But can a five foot nothing, 95 lb woman really manhandle the bad guys the way Grace does? Not in the real world she can't. I also think there is too much nudity. They could have established Grace's, shall we say, undiscriminating sex life without showing her naked in every single episode. That said, the acting is good and I really enjoy Leon Rippy as Earl.

What a delectable melting pot of colorful characters and story lines. The series is entertaining, thought-provoking, funny, silly, serious, and extremely well-written. As Earl reminds us, we have free will, so if nudity, profanity, promiscuity, crime, smoking, and drinking are offensive to you, pop an Old Yeller or Pollyanna (I LOVE those movies too) video in your player and chill. The cast is nothing short of perfection. I can't visualize anyone else playing those roles. I have Okie roots myself, as does my husband, so these guys feel like family. For me the underlying message of the show is: Make good choices, get good consequences, and vice versa. And no matter what your burning, angst-filled, life questions may be, the answers are inside your own heart. And so is God.

Detective Hanadarko is really out there, and while she struggles with issues of faith, trust, survivorship and family...she never fails to find a new an exciting mess as she moves through her life and career. Someone said this is the "Twilight" addiction for the 40+ class. Truer words were never spoken.
