The timeless themes of love and marriage in Jane Austen's superb romantic comedy Pride and Prejudice have captured readers for generations--the novel has sold more than 20 million copies and has never been out of print. Now, A&E and the BBC have brought this beloved classic to life in a compelling production directed by Upstairs, Downstairs' Simon Langton. This stunning production captures all the celebrated beauty of the English countryside and its glorious, stately manors. It features lavish costumes and an exquisite soundtrack from noted composer Carl Davis.
Pride and Prejudice is the story of the lively and rebellious Elizabeth Bennet, one of five unmarried daughters living in the countryside of 19th-century England. In a world where obtaining an advantageous marriage is a woman's sole occupation, Elizabeth's independent manner threatens her family's future. Will her romantic sparring with the mysterious and arrogant Darcy end in misfortune--or will love's true nature prevail?
Blu-ray features brand new bonus materials including a fascinating short film about the technical restoration process.

BBC Production...ExcellentJul 23, 2010 Have both the BBC production & the movie. Wonderful book brought to life in both versions.
One with an older Elizabeth Bennett & a faithful adaptation of the book.
The other with a young Keira Knightley, some changes to the story, but nonetheless an absolutely stunning movie.
I recommend both versions.

Unable to run dvdJul 12, 2010 I cannot run the DVD Pride and Prejudice-The Special Edition (A&E, 1996) on my
machine. I cannot control the tracking of the movie as it plays. I would
appreciate any suggestions.

A Worthwhile ReissueJul 07, 2010 This Restored Edition is video/audio-enhanced and worthy of collection. Repetitive viewing of credits of each A&E segment that's not to be found in the "Special" edition is slightly annoying but fast forward player controls handle it easily with little interruption so it is not really a worthy criticism.
It's the best film production I've seen; Jane Austen may have been pleased. The screenplay follows the book well thus requiring the extended viewing time of other offerings. The acting is superb. Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle depict their characters well and the rest of the cast complements them.
I've seen this production since its A&E debut as well as its "Special" and "Restored" forms. I return to it so it must be worthy of my rating.

GREATLY IMPROVED TRANSFERJul 03, 2010 This new 2010 digitally restored "Pride and Prejudice" is, indeed, worlds better than the previous 2001 Special Edition "P&P," which as all of us who bought the previous DVD found out, was pretty terrible. Well worth replacing in my opinion. Now I wish that A&E would see fit to digitally restore "Jewel in the Crown."

Jennifer Ehle is great. Who is Colin Firth?Jul 02, 2010 The visit of Mr. Collins after Lidia's elopement, was out of the flow of the story. The 1980 version has a letter coming from him (as Jane A. wrote it) which is
a better rendition. The 1995 version could have been eight hours long, and be more enjoyable.
I have two DVD sets and one VHS set.
I also have the other versions.
My preferences in order are:
1995 version the best
1980 version very good
1940 version (we have Laurence Oliviea)
2005 version (the director thinks too much of
himself and not enough of Jane A.)
