An absolutely brilliant, beautiful series.
Box design is fine, as well as DVD set-up. Book is filled with interesting words & several nice photographs all in color.
DVD content, is of course, wonderful.
Despite it only lasting for nineteen episodes, I can watch this series again & again.

Wow. Honestly one of, if not the, best television series I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Winnie Holzman did an amazing thing by creating this amazing TV show. I knew that it was critically acclaimed when I bought it a few months ago, but I honestly didn't think that it would be this good.
Claire Danes was obviously the best actor as Angela Chase, and still, for me, had the best performance of any teen actor I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of teen dramas. That said, Brian Krakow was my favorite character. I have a lot of Brian in me, mixed with Angela and Rayanne Graff. I LOVED Rayanne. She is such a free-spirit, and doesn't really take anyone's opinions besides her own. A.J. Langer NEEDS more work, as she's such a great actress. The other teenagers in the show, Rickie, Sharon, and the infamous Jordan Catalano, were great as well. I didn't dislike anyone in the cast. The most depressing storyline was that of Rickie Vasquez's. I don't want to give away spoilers, but the Christmas episode, "So-Called Angels", is truly sad and examines such a real dilemma in our society, especially at that time (early/mid 90's.)
Before I continue, I must say this is one of the best DVD sets I own. How they got nearly ALL the cast members (really all of them except Jared Leto) back for interviews, commentary on episodes, and other features was great. Claire Danes and Winnie Holzman seem to share such an intricately woven bond... like they both jump-started each other's careers, and it's fun watching them talk in the featurette "A Conversation with Claire Danes and Winnie Holzman."
In terms of bonus features, there were plenty. First of all, I LOVED the packaging. It's like a box, and the cover just opens up to reveal, first, a book with a few paragraphs about how the show would have gone from creator Winnie Holzman (she also has something at the end, too, and random facts scattered throughout the episode guide), essays from Joss Whedon, Janeane Garfalo, and more. There's also an episode guide that gives non-spoilery summaries about each episode, music featured in the episode, guest stars, directed/written by's, air dates, and a quote from the episode. There are also full-colored pictures, both candid and professional, throughout the booklet.
After that is the actual six-disc set, the first five being episodes from the show, and the last disc being exclusively special features. (Note: There are commentaries on each disc from cast and crew members).
The special features really upgrade this release, as if it could even be due to the already amazing show.
The show was often hilarious, such as the running Tino gag and Angela's commentary on her life. Most of all, though, the show was realistic. Never before have I seen such a realistic portrayal of a high school in contemporary times. Angela's introspective thoughts were, verbatim, some of my own thoughts and realizations. I don't know what else to say, really... if you're looking for quality television, look no further because MSCL, I guarantee, will find its place in your heart for the rest of your life.

So I love MSCL. I was 15 when it aired, and to this day I wish it hadn't been canceled. Kudos for SHOUT! though. Because of them I have Undeclared, Freaks and Geeks and MSCL on DVD.
There are only two things that would have made it better. One, I would have liked to have more extras. I know that may be impossible since this series existed before the crazy technology era, so they probably don't have much behind the scenes video available. Second, I was so excited by the commentary option, but was pretty bored with it once I actually listened to it. My favorite episode "Self Esteem" had commentary with Claire Danes and Winnie Holzman, which I couldn't wait to hear. Unfortunately, it turned out to be just a bunch of laughing and nonsense. They barely gave any insight to the episode. Same is true of the other commentaries so I suggest only watching the episodes. Of course, if you love hearing artists overuse words like "organically" -- then you'll love the commentaries. Claire Danes's over-enunciation might not get on your nerves either.

Even though My so-called was canceled in the first season I still think it was an awesome show, and I would have loved it if it would have aired for a few more seasons...I guess it came out at the wrong time.

Read most of the reviews on this site. Most mention the acting or Claire Danes. To me what set this series apart from anything else is the members of the cast they addded. Jeff Perry who played Mr. Katimski, Lisa Waltz who played Hallie Lowenthal and Senta Mosses who played Delia Fisher all came on this show after it had already had at least 5 epsidoes. I think the creators were smart enough to know they needed a bit more. These 3 charcters addded so much to the show without taking away what was already there. Mr Katimski scenes with Rickie, Hallie with Graham and Delia with Brian and Rickie are some of the very best. Fans of the show go back and watch the scenes involving Mr Katimski , Hallie and Delia and tell me if you dont agree that they are some of the very best.
