The mini-series tells the story of these young Marines physical and emotional journey into the heart of Baghdad in those initial weeks, and how the war reveals to be much more complicated, problematic and tragic than anyone had contemplated. Many of the complications and problems that arise are due to the unwieldy military bureaucracy which the Marines confront in the midst of the war, the challenges of over-zealous and incompetent commanding officers, ever-changing rules of engagement, a non-existent strategy, severe deficiencies in necessary armor and supplies, and an enemy they don’t understand. Generation Kill is a humorous and frightening first hand account of these remarkable men, of the personal toll of victory, and of the brutality, camaraderie and bureaucracy of a new American war. It is a profoundly insightful and realistic look at the risk, costs and ultimately, the failures of the war. Written and produced by Emmy-award winner David Simon (the Wire), and also produced by the award-winning George Faber (Elizabeth I). | | | Product Details: | | | Actors:

Generation KillJul 30, 2010 I became interested in this series after reading the best-selling book of the same title. The book was outstanding and HBO's 7-part video/TV series of "Generation Kill" wasn't far behind. Like the book, the videos follow an actual group (real persons are portrayed primarily by actors...but the protagonists are real none the less) of Force Recon Marines as they enter Iraq in March 2003 as a "point" unit until they reach Baghdad and points north. Although the Iraq war would change drastically in the next few years "Generation Kill" is an excellent chronicle of the earliest phases of that war and its subsequent impact on the Marines involved. As a Vietnam combat veteran I have to say that these young Marines are a lot smarter than we were overall in terms of their ability to cut through the BS and see things as they are. And, they are every part as brave. This video series (and the book) are a must see for anyone interested in military history, on the impact of war on young hearts and minds, and the idiocy and incompetence that have accompanied troops into battle since time began. Excellent job by HBO.
Good series!Jul 27, 2010 A must watch for any war movie/series fan. I consider it the 'Band of Brothers' for the Iraq War. Although I am not a military veteran, it seems to touch upon many of the aspects of recent wartime, like friendly-fire, officers that shouldn't be officers, PTS, etc.
Acting is superb, esp James Ransone. HBO fans remember him from Ziggy in 'The Wire'. Make sure to pay attention when he goes on one of his philosophic rants!
Reasons it doesn't get 5-stars:
- When you first put in the DVD, you get tons of HBO preview stuff that you have to watch before you can access the main menu. Give yourself a good five minutes the first time you use the DVD.
- Didn't like the Director's commentary....they don't talk about the scene you are watching and what they were trying to communicate to the viewer; instead they just keep going on rants on how good the actors do, filming location, etc. and rarely get specific on the scene you are viewing.
- For the military novice, be prepared to be diluged with military-speak and abbreviations. Luckily, there is a 'dictionary' booklet inside the DVD case which helps, and the subtitling (even English) is an option. I found they would start talking about some abbreviation over and over and had to pause and look it up a lot.

Spot on look at infantry Marines at war.Jul 21, 2010 As a retired infantry Marine I found the portrayals extremely accurate and consistent with infantry and comm Marines. I served from 1982 to 2006 in the infantry and have to say that I saw a lot of my men in all the characters from the miniseries. The only problem I had as a senior enlisted Marine was the portrayal of SgtMaj Sixta, being a 9999 myself I saw a bunch of wanna be hardasses in the SgtMaj billet but none as over the top as his character, had I personally I would have slapped some sense into him. I thought the language was spot on, I thought the grab ass was spot on, I also thought the conversations regarding ethnicity and backgrounds were spot on accurate and I had no problem with the realism expressed. Overall what I saw on the screen was a highly trained recon/infantry unit performing outside the box of their comfort zone and doing so superbly. I also thought the mix of real Marines and actors and the technical expertise expressed was exceptional. Well done and bravo zulu to all involved.

Generation Kill ReviewJul 20, 2010 This series was a little outrageous, but funny. I don't really buy that rangers acted like this, but good drama. I did like the lingo of the military speak, they probably went a little overboard with the curse words. My favorite part is the end of each episode. I remember hearing that they got actual rangers for that part.
Great ShowJul 17, 2010 I am always referencing things about this series and had a conversation with my friend who is in the Army. I realized that I did not have the series in my DVD collection.
If you like various characters point of view about anything, I recommend this!!!
