 A decent season, but best purchased with season twoSep 07, 2010
Traditionally, for VHS and such, Dragon Ball Z has been broken down by "sagas" rather than the more popular "seasons" which have become the standard on DVD. The new season formats for DBZ can probably best be understood by breaking the series up into three separate story-arcs, each consisting of three complete seasons and culminating in an epic confrontation with one of the series' three super-villains. As such, it would look something like this:

By general definition, seasons 1, 4 and 7 tend to be slower-paced than the other seasons... but are still essential for hardcore fans of the series. In my personal opinion, however, season one is probably the least impressive of the series. Not only is most of this season just useless filler, but season one tends to seem more like an extended prologue to season two--where the series really hits its stride.
For people less familiar with the Saiyan saga, this season is comprised of the battles with Raditz (Goku's brother) and then the one with Nappa and Vegeta, which culminates in the deaths of Piccolo and Kami... which forces Krillin, Bulma and Gohan to travel to Namek to wish back their friends (earth's balls having disappeared with Kami). The season is sparsely littered plot threads following Goku as he travels on snake way to reach King Kai and receive special training, and another following Gohan as he is trained by Piccolo. Neither of these plots are very compelling and seem to exist for the sole purpose of stretching the storyline out even further than necessary. The actual battles with the various Saiyans are still satisfying (though really only a taste of what's to come later on.
Much has also been said about this release and the issue of inferior crap--essentially removing tiny sections of the top and bottom of the frame in order to present the series in widescreen. Unless you are actually comparing the older VHS releases and these new DVDs side by side, the difference is not likely to be noticed, but it is still disappointing as a matter of principle. It must also be noted that there are practically no special features on this release... except the exceptional "marathon" ability to watch all episodes on the disc without pauses, intros or outros.
All things considered, Season One of Dragon Ball Z is decent but lackluster. The battle with Vegeta comes close to hitting the epic level the series is known for, but Season One of Dragon Ball Z is probably best purchased with Season Two, and buyers of Season One need to remember that the series picks up in quality in season two.

Got here quick. Works great. I'm not a hardcore, down to the point, anime fan. I just grew up with and love DBZ. These episodes are beautifully remastered and colored. The audio is great and all of the dvds work. Thank you for such an amazing product!

I absolutely loved this product! It is great for if you're a huge fan of the show, as I was, or even if you are a DBZ newcomer. I would highly recommend this product.

Its classic dragon ball z and its great only thing that sucks is the music is i guess the orginal from japan not what they had on toonami 10 or so years ago which is a little bummer. still if your a fan buy it.

I love dragonball z it's my favorite anime but when I got this from amazon disc 5's holder was broken this has happened to me before with dragonball z got season 9 opened it disc 5's holder was broken but season nine I got at target so that is why I gave this a low rating if the holder was not broken I would have gave this a 5 get the dragon set's not orange set's
